Just wanted to say a quick thanks - I've listened to a few random tracks from most of these artists, but was always unsure of where to start, album-wise. Advice from more knowledgeable fans is always the best way to get started - I've got my hands on 4 of them now, listening and very much enjoying.

@11: What I like about Ayreon is exactly the same thing I like about Riverside: The synthesizers :) I admit not everybody likes that but some do. I'm one of them.

@12: I don't mind how they look like. Go, worship people like Britney Spears in her early days ;-)

From this list, I used to like Blind Guardian and Dream Theatre.
Now I am a stupid black/death metal fan. I can't listen to clean vocals any more.

But due to the old times, me and a friend went to see Dream Theatre live a couple of weeks ago. I knew only one song they played: "Surrounded". And I have never liked it so much. My friend, who is a not stupid black/death metal fan, he can hear other metals, told me "I can't believe! It's over! And 'Metropolis'? And 'Pull me under'?". And all of them except Myung were so fat. Ten years made a great difference to them. It reminded me the last Blind Guardian gig here and the huge Hansi Kürsch's belly. Good bands, not so good gigs these days.

I would like to suggest some good (and some of them heavier) albums too:
Angra - Rebirth (you really should listen to it)
Anorexia Nervosa - Redemption Process
Dark Tranquillity - The Mind's I
Emperor - Anthems to Welkin at Dusk
Hollenthon - With Vilest of Worms to Dwell

I can't stand fruity sounding synth if that's what Ayreon is, but the only song I've heard from them was "Into the Black Hole" with Bruce Dickinson's vocals from Universal Migrator Part 2: Flight of the Migrator. His vocals, as usual, were divine, but I don't like the synth crap, to each his own, I still recommend the song.

You might probably also like Symphony X. Their fifth album called "V" is a masterpiece.

I officially approve of this list :D
I'd have to add Epica and The Black Halo from Kamelot, too.

I'm definitely a prog (rock|metal|whatever) fan of some sort (Dream Theater's been on my list for ages, as well as Rush, the canonical prog rock) -- great list you have here. However, you don't recommend Y as a good first Ayreon album. Which would you recommend? I'm always up for music recommendations, but I'd like the best chance at enjoying it.
